A photographer and some wonderful volunteers doing pink things to support October's breast cancer awareness campaigns.#BreastCancerAwareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and across the world there are campaigns to increase awareness of the disease. For the last 2 years I've asked a few friends to help me to raise awareness by wearing only the pink ribbon and allow me take a photo, usually I've done these shoots in September to launch the during October and have had the support of some amazing women (survivors and supporters) here on the island of Mallorca which included the beautiful TV presenter and model Melanie Sykes when she came to visit. We did her shoot at La Residencia in a room overlooking a sculpture we had comissioned a local artist do do in memory of Sue Burrows, a wonderful lady who was the face of a Calendar I created a few years ago to raise money for cancer support charities in Malllorca, sadly Sue died soon after the Calendar was published. My wonderful friend and amazing Makeup Artist Susie Kennett throughout all my cancer awareness campaigns has donated her time to preen, paint and pamper my volunteers.
In truth I hadn't planned to do anything this year, there's only so much one can do with a ribbon and selfishly this year I wanted to celebrate my 50th birthday and concentrate on my own things..... October is now an upsetting month for me as my mum died having had breast cancer a few days before my birthday a few years ago. Anyway birthday celebrations over and I felt bad for not having done anything this year but then I was offered some VOC free pink paint from Frenchic by Vintiquities so, as before, I put a post out on FB for a volunteer do do one shot with the paint. So many ladies applied and I ended up choosing two. Both survivors and both very different women. It made sense, given there are are two sides to my photography ..... my normal 'be a model for a day' Vogue days shoots and my rather more riske Sh Confidential shoots, designed more to create fantasy art pieces, to portray both styles so we came up with #paintitpink Naughty and Nice ....
I painted a corner of my studio in pink and just to make it challenging I decided to use my new camera, a Leica M I am still learning to use ... I'm used to Canon! Leo, little Miss Naughty, ordered pink boots and a few props whislt she was in hospital having had a tissue expander put in. Miss Nice who had breast cancer nearly 10 years ago and hadn't opted for reconstruction allowed my makeup artist Susie to quite literally throw paint at her for some of the shots and I now have pink paint everywhere in the studio! I hope the photos speak for themselves as I am terrible at writing .... please feel free to share them and support our campaign to raise awareness for this terrible disease which affects so many.
While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. By taking these photos, I hope to remeind everyone how imortant it is do check your breasts.
